A surface treatment protects a finished part from corrosion and wear, or gives it a particular look. It is usually the last step after machining or fabrication, and the right choice depends on the base material and where the part will be used.

Treatments available
- Zinc plating: a protective coating that helps steel resist corrosion
- Black zinc: zinc plating with a black finish
- Nickel plating: a hard, corrosion-resistant finish
- Copper plating: used for conductivity and as an undercoat for other finishes
- Passivation: treats stainless steel to improve corrosion resistance
- Anodising of aluminium: thickens the natural oxide layer for corrosion and wear resistance
